Ranks (and their descriptions)

CITIES:

TOP RANKING:

Leader:
The one who is in complete charge of their city of residence. They hold power over the other ranks, even in the other city. Everyone should treat them with the utmost respect at all times and obey their laws. If they do not become leader by succession, they are chosen by the chief, with guidance from the City of Stars. When they become leader, they may learn the skills of the other ranks, to protect themselves and their city, and to make sure they are as knowledgeable as possible.

Deputy:
The second in command. They are also to be shown respect. When the current leader steps down or loses their lives, the deputy will take over as the new leader, and will then choose the next deputy with assistance from the chief.

Chief:
The most spiritual rank. The chief is known to receive visions from their deceased ancestors who reside in the realm known as the City of Stars. These visions may contain anything; a warning, a prophecy, a good/bad omen, signs of the new leader/deputy, etc.. The leader often comes to the chief for advice, as chiefs are known for being very wise and mature.

HEALERS:

Healer:
Healer is one of the most important ranks in the cities. Without the healers, many would have passed away by now, be it from illness or injury. Some prefer to work with the eyes, nose and throat, and some prefer to do surgery whenever it is needed. There is a healer for everything and anything. Some don't even have a preference for what medical practice they use. They have no connection with the City of Stars, though their ancestors may send word of illnesses or plague to the chief who will, in turn, notify the healers to be prepared.

Healer novice:
There can be a maximum of three healer novices at one time. Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

FIGHTING FORCE:

Mercenaries:
This rank is for the fighters. They are very skilled with their weapon(s) of choice and they must all put their lives at stake in defending the cities and their inhabitants. In the past, rebel groups have formed, or the city-less have felt brave, and tried to attack the cities. They didn't get very far, thanks to the mercenaries. Some are tall and physically strong, wielding swords and axes and maces, unafraid to charge right into the heat of the battle, whilst some are small-built and agile, cunning in the way they could hide in trees or behind boulders and pick off enemies from the sidelines.

Mercenary novices:
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

FOOD PROVIDERS:

Hunters:
The ones skilled at hunting wild animals for meat and furs. They go out into neutral territory, and they will set traps and snares for the animals, or they will put their weapon(s) of choice to good use. Usually the traps are more effective, unless their weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. Swords and knives aren't really very useful unless they are willing to get as close as possible to the animal without it noticing them until they strike. The game they catch will be sold in the city shops or the City Square, and the same will happen with the fur once it's been skinned. They can hunt whatever game they like, as long as it is wild, no matter the size; small animals like squirrels and rabbits are most common, but if they're feeling lucky, they can try to take down a cougar or a bear.

Hunter novices:
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

Gatherers:
The ones who go out into neutral territory and search for plants, herbs, fruits; anything edible. They must learn tons of information about the plants that grow, and remember which are poisonous and which are safe. If they forget, a tiny slip-up in their gathering could cause someone quite a large deal of pain as their body tries to expel the poisonous food. Most of the things they gather are for everyone, but some go to the healers exclusively to be used in natural remedies and ointments.

Gatherer novices:
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

CRAFTERS:

Weavers:
(those who make clothes for the city-clans. They take fabric and make blankets, pillows, clothes, shoes, bedding, ect for all the people. They have to be focused and have a keen eye for color and fashion.)

Weaver novices:
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

Blacksmiths:
The ones who forge weapons and other useful items for the cities. Most of what they make will be sold at the City Square, though they can make their own weapons and create new things for their own use if they so please. They must be strong in order to lift the metals, and have steady hands so they don't make mistakes, and able to put up with the heat in the forges so they don't dehydrate whilst working.

Blacksmith novices:
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

Merchants:
Those who trade in the City Square with the other city - and sometimes even the city-less - in order to get supplies. They can own shops in the city, and if they don't have a shop in the City Square, they can set up stalls there. They must be smart and charming in order to tally up the costs of items and attract customers. They can trade almost anything; weapons, furs, game, meats, herbs, medicines, etc..

Merchant novices
Chosen from the unranked children who show more skill for this rank than the others.

Nannies:
(those that are pregnant or help the pregnant women raise the children. They stay in the houses with the other pregnant mothers and children. Usually helping out with the babies and the tasks they need to do including keeping their house tidy. Wet nurses are either those that have had children before and stay to help out or those who want to lend their services to the mothers as nanny's.)

Mothers:

Children:
(those who are too young to become novices, they try out every skill and learn just a little of each to decide what they want to be. The leader and deputy will help them come to a disision and will announce their rank at their novice ceremony.)

Retired:
(those too old to help, they are respected and must be listened to. They have great tales about the city clans and the wars that have passed. They are cranky but well tended to. They can also be retired if they have been hurt or have a disability that prevents them from their duty such as loosing their eye sight or hearing, or getting their legs cut off in battle or an accident.)

CITY-LESS:

Workers:
(they can be hired to do the work nobody else wishes to do)

Worker novices:
Chosen randomly from the unranked children.

Traders:
(those who specialize in trading things with the city-clans)

Trader novices:
Chosen randomly from the unranked children.

Gatherers:
(those who gather food, materials, etc.)

Gatherer novices:
Chosen randomly from the unranked children.

Mothers:
(those that are pregnant and raise the children)

Children (those who are too young to become novices, they are chosen randomly to become a certain type of novice)

Every rank learns how to fight once reaching the novice stage in life. Even the healers, so they can learn to defend themselves. Any novice can choose to do extra fight training with a few of the mercenary novices in their free time if they wish.
Only the mercenary novices and mercenaries learn the more advanced fighting and weapon-handling.

The city-less learn what they can, but they don't know nearly as much as the cities, though some have taught themselves and are almost as skilled as the cities' mercenaries.
